Tutorial #1 Page 2: Working with Coloring formulas |
1. Now that we have a nice spiral selected, it's time to apply a coloring formula
to enhance it and create a beautiful work of art. A lot of people find it easy
and fun to start out with Doodads in the ldm.ucl folder. To select this formula,
go to the Outside tab and click on the Browse icon and go to the Public folder.
Scroll down until you come to ldm.ucl. Click Open and select Doodads and click
Open again. |

2. At this point you need to replace the gradient with a Grayscale in the Standard
folder for gradients. To do this, push F4 and then right click on the gradient.
Click on Replace and select Grayscale. You can make a folder of your own gradients
that you create or collect. There are no copyrights on gradients, but if
you publish your fractal, it is considerate and ethical to say where you obtained
the gradient if it is not your own. I always start out with a grayscale to
make it easier to find nice shapes. |

3. After you open the gradient, you will need to do some tweaking to get a nice well
defined spiral. On the Outside Tab change the Transfer Function to Sqt and
set the Color Density to 2. Move the gradient slider to the left until you get
an image that looks like this. |

4. Now it is time to start playing with the Doodad parameters to find a nice shape.
This is where the explore mode of UF4.03 really becomes useful. First go to
the Trap Mode and Flavor and start changing these parameters to see the difference
they make. You will get a huge variety of shapes and elements to enhance your
spiral. I ended up at Fractal Mode 6 and Flavor B. Scroll down to Trap Addend
and right click on this value and click on Explore. This is where the real fun
begins. Move the curser all around the explore grid to see the changes. If you
find one you like, left click to select it. I ended up with a value of
0.4602 |

5. Next, scroll down to Functions and start playing with the different parameters
in that section. I like the look I get when I change the Real function to flip
so I add a layer (push the icon to the right of
the layer) to save these settings, and then continue exploring. With this
new layer, I scroll back up to the Twist 1 parameters under Morph. Right click
and start exploring to see the changes this parameter makes. When you find something
you like, left click to select it, and then compare the change with the
original layer by clicking this layer off and on. |

6. When you find a nice shape, duplicate this layer and then scroll back down to
the Functions and change the Final Trap function to conj. As you can see, this
process can go on and on and you can end up with a large collection of many layers
of nice fractal shapes to play with. If you scroll through all the options
you have in Doodads, you can see there are many other parameters to play
with. I only changed a few and you can see the nice spirals we ended up with.
You can continue exploring and duplicating each layer that you want to keep.
Click on file and then Save Parameters. Name this fractal Tutorial_1b to keep
all the nice shapes you found.. I stopped after finding this third variation
and the UPR is below so that you can check all the settings. |
