When I first started using UF at the beginning of 2004, I thought I would never be
able to make anything. I was totally overwhelmed by the vast number of formulas
and the complexity of all the parameters. I went through the built-in tutorials
several times and then spent some weeks trying to construct my own original
fractals. Needless to say, I made many false starts that left me totally discouraged.
Finally I got the idea of staying with one formula, trying different coloring
algorithms, and then merging the layers until I got something decent. Here
is the result: |

You can immediately see that it is rather dark and there is a big black hole in the
middle of the spiral. Let's fix the hole first. . If you look down at the Statistics
window, you will see the value for Inside is 0.6%. That is usually a good
indication that you have inside areas showing, which in this case I have colored
black. The easiest way to remedy this is to increase the Maximum Iterations
(which is how many times the formula is calculated) on the Formula Tab. I started
with the Background layer and changed the Maximum Iterations to 500. You
can see from the image below that the hole is now totally filled with spiral structure.
I then went to each layer and changed this value. The other way to fix
this problem is simply to click on the Inside Tab, change the Transfer Function
from None to Linear or any other function, and then click on the Browse icon
and select a coloring formula to fill in the black hole. I much prefer the first
method in this case. |

When I analyze a fractal for study and/or tweaking, I always start with the bottom
layer, turning each layer on in succession to see the affect each has on the
total image. In doing this, I discovered that Layer 2 has a merge mode of Normal.
This essentially blocks the bottom two layers from having any affect on the
image. Any layers with a merge mode of Normal will be totally opaque to, and nonreactive
with the layers below it unless you have some transparency in that layer.
The bottom layer will always have the affect of Normal mode regardless of
what merge mode you have it set on. I played around with the merge mode of Layer
2 a bit and ended up with Hard Light. After that, I needed to change the merge
mode of Layer 1 since it was now affecting the image. I changed it to Multiply
and rotated the gradient a bit. Here is the result: |

Finally, we have the problem with the image being a little too dark. This is also
a common problem with beginners. There is an easy solution to this problem. I
make sure the top layer is active and then right-click on the icon to Add a layer.
From the list, I select Add Lighten. I change the merge mode to Overlay and
move the opacity slider over until I have the image lightened enough for me. Here

Now this is by no means a finished work of art that I would post in a gallery, but
it is adequate for showing how to solve simple problems with beginning fractals.
